The Fine Art of Success

What can Managers and Organizations Learn from the Arts?

You′ve read about Jack Welch, Lou Gerstner and Steve Jobs – but what can you learn about business from van Gogh and Picasso? The Fine Art of Success shows why you should look to pop–stars like Madonna or artists like Damien Hirst for guidance on innovation, competitive advantage, leadership, and a host of other business issues.

The Fine Art of Success was recently featured on BBC World Business Report. To listen to the broadcast, please click HERE.

NEW BOOK

There are hundreds of business books espousing ‘new’ insights into key concepts in management. But most of these texts draw on well known case studies and insights from the corporate world, often dressing existing frameworks in new management ‘buzz’ words - but offering few new revelations. Very few discuss Picasso and Madonna as case studies for corporate success. To order the book, please click HERE.

About the Book
In our newly published book, my co-authors Joerg Reckhenrich, Martin Kupp and I discuss successful strategies for driving innovation and creativity in the business world, but we do not turn to the analysis of well known corporations such as Microsoft, IBM or Nokia. Instead, we examine the experiences of creative artists - from 16th Century painters such as Tizian and Tintoretto, to 19th and early 20th Century creative geniuses like van Gogh, Gauguin and Picasso, and contemporary greats such as Madonna and Damien Hirst.

We suggest that the success stories of creative artists such as Picasso and Madonna have relevant lessons for contemporary managers- and the various chapters provide refreshing and entertaining case studies. At a time of global economic crisis, fresh and innovative insights are needed for business; this book will provides those insights.

As a taster of the content of our book, our chapter on Damien Hirst analyses Hirst as an artist, entrepreneur and strategic innovator, and reflects upon the lessons offered by Hirst’s experience to organizations and practicing managers. We suggest that Hirst’s rise to prominence should be understood in terms of his ability to be unhindered by established and preconceived norms of the art world.

Hirst recognised that by the end of the 20th Century the established art world had become victim to a
phenomenon that psychologists term `inattentional blindness' - when attention is very focused on specific tasks or approaches, humans often fail to perceive significant events, threats or opportunities that are outside their focus. Hirst was able to smash the thick and opaque lenses of tradition in the established art world, and in doing so strategically innovated.

In turn, Hirst’s innovative approach saw the emergence of a new market space, a space in which he was the undisputed first mover and dominant brand.
